I have run a web design, development and hosting company for small and mid-sized businesses since 2021, after serving in the Marine Corps until 2019. I found Breakdance in 2024 and most of my agency's sites were built with it. Everything here comes out of client work, which is why the tutorials cover the parts that actually break.

What people ask me about EmDash
What is EmDash?
An open-source CMS built on Astro, with a full admin for editing content and a site you write in Astro. Version 1.0 shipped in September 2026, and 1.1 followed on October 1.
Do I need Cloudflare to run it?
No. It runs on Cloudflare Workers with D1 and R2, or on a Node.js server with SQLite and local file storage. Every site I build runs on Workers.
Can EmDash replace my WordPress site?
For a service business, a blog or a portfolio, yes. For an online store, not yet, because nothing matches WooCommerce. My agency moves WordPress sites over, and the Leave WordPress page explains how.
Where do I find themes and plugins?
I keep a checked list in the EmDash directory, with the price and sandbox status for each one.
